CYC Winter Sailing on Sundays - 2024-25
September - March
INVITATION TO RACE
INVITATION: CYC invites all interested skippers and crew to participate in a “for fun” Sunday race series on the Columbia River between the I-5 and I-205 bridges. New sailors and racers are especially encouraged to join.
DESCRIPTION: This is a multiple week series with one race scheduled each Sunday (see exceptions below). This casual race series was started as an excuse for sailors to get out on the water through the winter months. The event has attracted a variety of racers and cruisers who all share in a desire for sailing and light hearted competition.
ELIGIBILITY AND INSTRUCTIONS: This series will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing and the OCSA General Sailing Instructions (GSI), except as modified by the NOR. This event is open to all boats who comply with OCSA GSI 17 & 18. A boat must be registered to participate. All boats are welcome to race in the level fleet. The Race Captain may choose to include an ORC and/or PHRF fleets – boats racing in these fleets must have valid ORC or PHRF-NW certificates.
DATES AND TIMES: Sundays September 22, 2024 through March 9, 2025. There will be no races on the following Sundays: December 1 (Thanksgiving weekend), December 22, and 29. (holiday break). To allow for better wind development during daylight savings time, for races between September 22 and October 27, the first warning will be 1400 hours (PDT) each Sunday with first start at 1405 hours. Thereafter starting on November 3, the first warning will be 1300 hours (PST) with first start at 1305 hours. All fleets may be started together, or sequentially at the discretion of the Race Committee. The start sequence will be announced on VHF 72. A two (2) hour time limit shall be imposed.
REGISTRATION AND FEES: There is a $50 entry fee for all competitors to help defray the cost of Regatta Network fees and the much higher insurance rates CYC is experiencing. All competitors are expected to volunteer as Race Committee one Sunday in the series. The committee boat receives a first place the day they volunteer. Register for the series online at www.sailpdx.org and for race committee duty at https://signup.com/go/JjiSZCc.
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS: Any amendments or supplements to the NOR and race results shall only be posted on to the official Notice Board at www.sailpdx.org. Other information and communications shall be posted using the Google Group: http://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/sos-pdx, which is not official race information for purposes of any protests. For questions or more information, email: race.captain@cycportland.org.
CLASS DIVISIONS: Boats may choose to sail the course un-scored, race level, or race under ORC or PHRF handicaps if so offered (as specified at time of entry).
COURSES: The start line will be between Buoy 14 and the committee boat, which will be anchored south of Buoy 14 near the RCYC docks. The course and finish line will be determined by the Race Committee the day of the race and announced on VHF 72 before the start sequence. The course commonly includes navigational buoys 2, 14 and 18. The Race Committee will monitor VHF 72. The start/finish line is restricted.
PROTESTS: Competitors are encouraged to settle disputes in keeping with Corinthian spirit. Protests are emphatically discouraged, but may be lodged if absolutely necessary following OCSA Sailing Instructions at www.sailpdx.org.
