The great city of Jacksonville was not always named after Andrew Jackson. In its early years it was named after the fact that the area near present day downtown was a very popular crossing point of the St. Johns River for ranchers and their cattle herds, due to the narrow width between sides. The name of this regatta celebrates the grand history of Jacksonville and its relationship to the St. Johns River, as was described in the city’s original name of COWFORD.
