Response to RC inquiry about the Sailing Instructions:

12.5. If, Instead of flying code flag “S”, a Race Committee Vessel in the vicinity of a rounding mark of the course is flying code flag “R”, yachts are to round the race committee vessel to port and then proceed to the finish honoring previously passed course marks on the same side of the mark. The course mark at which the race committee boat is stationed by not need to be rounded. This changes RRS 32.

RC. With The R Flag the RC, instead of shortening the course using RRS 32 , with available navigation buoys, has the ability to reverse the fleet, back thru the course it just sailed to the finish. The rounding is to be at the boat with the Romeo flag not at the mark of the course nearby.

Comment:  One hypothetical was if the fleet was about to round N6/4 at cedar point on Course Alpha, counter-clockwise, and a wicked front was moving in from the NE., the RC has the ability to reverse the fleet prevent them from entering Gardiners Bay, (same at G7, on Bravo) so instead of stopping  it there,  (using the S flag the only other option) but  instead head back to the Peconic’s. Could be the same scenario with a lack of wind / tide issue. Could make some interesting sailing. ... But meant as an additional safety option for the RC.
