The Small Yacht Sailing Club of Oregon (SYSCO) was formed in 1978 as an ALL VOLUNTEER non-profit organization to promote one-design and level class sailboat racing and cruising, primarily with keelboats and multi-hulls 19' and up, and to educate its members in racing skills through a program of racing, educational sessions, and club meetings.

We are a club totally run by VOLUNTEERS at every position including Race Committee. Your volunteer obligations are listed below.

Importance of serving on your Race Committee.

I acknowledge that, without Board and Committee Membership as well as other support positions, there is no SYSCO Club. I further acknowledge that, without on-the-water Race Committees there is no SYSCO racing. The Club will not run without my support, and so I will step into the roles of committee chair and board membership as positions are available.

I further understand and agree that my SYSCO membership requires that, upon being asked by board members or other committee chairs, I undertake up to four hours of Club duty per year. These volunteer hour obligations DO NOT INCLUDE RACE COMMITTEE. Even if I race both Tuesdays and Thursdays, I understand I will need to skip a race or make other arrangement to support each of the fleets I race in for race committee support.

I would like to devote my volunteer time to: (You MUST Select at least two options)
Board Membership (at-large): Attend board meetings, head up one-time projects. Board meetings are first Monday of the month at 5:30pm on Zoom.
Race Captain: Manage racing overall with support of Tuesday/Thursday Race Coordinators.
Race Captain Support:Assist Race Captain with information distribution and volunteer coordination along with the Tuesday/Thursday Race Coordinators.
Race Committee Support: Provide signal/platform boat or volunteer on the RC boat for duties such as timing, recording, flag management, etc. This is in addition to what you will do for your fleet.
Tuesday Race Coordinator or Support: Coordinate with fleets, ensure RC signal/platform boat and mark boat are staffed. Coordinate PRO staffing.
Thursday Race Coordinator or Support: Coordinate with fleets, ensure RC signal/platform boat and mark boat are staffed. Coordinate PRO staffing.
Mark Boat Driver and/or Mark Setter: After training, drive mark boat or set and retrieve marks during races. This is in addition to your fleet support on your RC duty day.
PRO/Judge in training: Learn what it takes to be a PRO and how to serve as a racing judge. May mean training that you need to pay for, and extra RC duty to shadow a PRO.
Fleet Captain: Help your fleet become a cohesive group that does things together. Organize fleet meetings, parties, training sessions, and more. Organize a race committee when it is your fleet’s turn to run a race.
Social Media and/or Newsletter Content Provider: Help keep SYSCO website and other social media fresh, running, organized, and updated by providing content or recruiting sailing and racing accounts.
Archiving SYSCO: Collect, organize, find a way to tell the SYSCO story!
Membership Committee: Talk to new members, old members about their membership. Keep records up to date.
Social Events Committee: Coordinate with the Program Chair to organize, delegate, and plan SYSCO events such as Fleet Night. Coordinate with Race Committee for race clinics, etc.
Picnic Volunteer: Set-up, grilling, serve food, and break down. Have fun and get to know your fleets!
Program Chair: Promote sailing and racing, get guest speakers for meetings, race clinics, work with the Social Events Committee.
Annual Banquet: November 7, 2025. Planning, tropical decorating, clean up, etc. Work with SYSCO leadership, Program Chair and Social Events Committee.
